Chapter 227: Academy Heroine's Right Diagonal Back Seat

Chapter 227

A land covered in dark, ominous energy.

In this bleak and desolate landscape, a woman was walking.

From afar, she didn’t seem particularly noticeable. She was cloaked in a black hood that blended with the darkness around her, like camouflage to merge with this shadowy world.

Yet, even with her hood up, her presence was anything but faint.

No matter how much she tried to hide beneath the hood, her golden eyes gleamed brightly—eyes the color of greed that could blind anyone who gazed into them.

Anyone who looked into those eyes would find it impossible to look away.

Was it because she was beautiful?

That would be one reason, but there was something more.

Those who saw her eyes would inevitably feel that she was a twisted being.

Strange things always stand out. And like a crane among a flock of chickens or a nail sticking out of a pocket, she naturally drew attention.

It wasn’t because she was one of the few witches that existed in this world.

It was simply because she, from the start, was an alien presence that could never fully merge with the world around her.

But the woman didn’t care about that.

What mattered to her was getting what she wanted. That was all.

"Hmm, hmm-hmm~"

The woman, who had been walking across the barren ground, suddenly began humming a tune.

Although she could instantly move across great distances with a mere thought, she had chosen to walk with her own two feet simply because she was in a very good mood.

To fully savor that feeling, she was taking a rare walk, reminiscing about the fireworks that had filled the night sky the evening before.

"Ah, what a truly magnificent sight."

It wasn’t just because she hadn’t seen a fireworks display in a long time that she found it so captivating.

In the past, she had lived in a city that celebrated every night with grand festivals.

Even so, what made last night’s display so beautiful to her was the fact that she knew the situation inside the city.

Every stage shines brightest as it nears its climax.

"Do they know? That the end is near~"

Although unexpected events had occurred, that only made the play more fascinating. It had more than satisfied her twisted sense of enjoyment.

Overcome with emotion, she twirled and danced, humming a song to herself.

"I wonder how exhilarating it will feel when it all finally ends. Ah, I can’t wait to savor it, but it drives me mad thinking it’ll be over so soon."

The woman, who had once been known as a songstress, hummed a melody so enchanting it could captivate anyone who heard it. Her face, hidden beneath the hood, was filled with a smile—one that mixed satisfaction with a touch of regret.

"But there’s no turning back now. Just a little longer. So let’s all watch, until the stage reaches its final moment."

As she murmured this, the space around her was soon filled with beasts born from the dark energy, drawn to her overflowing magic.

It wasn’t unusual for this to happen.

When her emotions ran high, new spectators—these beasts—would appear.

The woman smiled and, like an actor taking a bow, exaggeratedly bent her waist to greet them.

However, today was different.

There was no sound. Nothing at all.

Normally, the beasts would roar, like an audience giving a standing ovation, but now there was only silence.

Feeling something was amiss, the woman raised her head.

What she saw was the beasts, frozen in place, unable to move even a finger.

As if they were petrified with fear.

Who in the world could instill such terror in these foul-tempered beasts, creatures who shared her twisted nature?

The woman let out a dry laugh and muttered to herself.

"I was so caught up in my emotions, I didn’t notice. When did you get here?"

At that moment, quietly…

Something descended onto the spot where the woman had been standing.

"...Quite the enthusiastic greeting, Sloth."

The woman had shifted behind the scene in an instant and now stared at the place where she had stood just moments before, murmuring softly.

It was gone.

There was no other way to describe it.

The area where the beasts had once stood was completely erased, leaving no trace that anything had ever existed there.

The woman swallowed dryly and then raised her gaze to the sky, sensing the overwhelming presence of the one responsible.

"Thanks to you, all my newborns just vanished," she remarked.

"Oh, is that where they were? They were so small, I didn’t notice~"

In response to her words, a voice echoed from above. At the same time, a girl with dark purple hair appeared, floating in midair.

The girl, lying on her stomach in the air and looking down at the woman, rolled over lazily and then plummeted toward the ground at terrifying speed.

Yet her landing was utterly silent.

No sound, no dust. Despite falling from a height that should have splattered her on impact, the girl casually rose to her feet, yawning in apparent boredom.

She patted the air behind her and mumbled.

"Bay, you’ve done enough to bring me here. You can go back now."

As if in response, the empty air rippled for a moment.

Seeing the faint silhouette that briefly appeared, the woman let out a soft laugh.

Even she, who had already sensed its presence, couldn’t help but feel a slight chill from the overwhelming aura it emitted.

That towering, four-legged beast looking down from above had been the reason everything had been so quiet during her walk.

Even without being visible, even without making a sound, any creature with a sense for magic would instinctively know when something like that was nearby.

Behemoth.

As the colossal beast vanished into the distance, having bowed slightly to its master, the woman turned to the girl and asked.

"So, what brings you here? Surely you didn’t come all this way just to see me."

"Reeaally? I thought you might know the reason."

The girl tilted her head, as if genuinely puzzled as to why she had come, while the woman chuckled and muttered to herself.

"Well, I can guess the reason. It's because of that half-witch, right? Ah, I suppose I shouldn’t call her 'half' anymore. Seems like she’s fully joined our side now. Though, I never expected someone carrying the name 'Witch of Wrath' would quietly slip out of the city without causing more chaos."

"Is that so... Anyway, you're right. Eva’s condition changed so rapidly, and that’s why I came."

The girl murmured as if she hadn’t known what had happened and then fixed her gaze on the woman, speaking with a slightly threatening tone.

"You haven’t forgotten, right? I specifically told you not to touch Eva before I did."

The woman exaggeratedly waved her hands in protest, answering with a feigned innocence.

"Of course not! I remember what you warned me about last time. Honestly, I wasn’t moving with her as the goal this time—I had a different purpose. What happened to her was as much of a surprise to me as it was to you."

"Hmm, really?"

"Really, I swear~"

"...Alright."

The girl nodded as if accepting the woman’s words, her seemingly calm demeanor now piquing the woman’s curiosity. Deep down, the woman thought, Ah, this might not be a good idea... but she couldn’t help herself.

Her personality thrived on curiosity and amusement.

"You know, you keep rushing over whenever something happens to her. It makes me think you're more invested in her than I thought. Your reactions just make me more curious about your relationship with her. Honestly, she’s caught my interest too, after showing some unexpected traits. But seeing how you react to her, I can’t help but wonder—what exactly was your relationship with her? Hmm? Beatr—"

Before the woman could finish her sentence, she froze, instinctively teleporting far away from where she stood.

She looked down at her trembling hand. Even though she hadn’t felt anything specific, her instincts told her one thing clearly: If I hadn’t moved, I would’ve died.

From a distance, the girl spoke, her expression unusually filled with emotion.

"I don’t remember ever giving you permission to call me by my name."

Had calling her name really struck such a nerve?

Though tempted to push her luck and see how the girl would react if she said it again, the woman quickly realized that she might truly be killed if she did. Swallowing her mischievous thoughts, she called out loudly.

"Ah, sorry! It was just a joke! I apologize! I won’t do it again, I swear!"

"This time, I’ll let it slide. But remember—there won’t be a second chance."

With those words, the girl flicked her hand, her voice fading into the distance as she disappeared, as if she had never been there.

The woman stood still for a moment, swallowing hard before glancing at the ground. Right at her feet, there was a faint, circular mark, as if something had reached her but stopped just short.

A warning.

If that mark had extended just a little further, what would’ve happened?

The woman’s lips twitched, and then she couldn’t contain herself anymore. She burst into laughter, shaking her head as she muttered to herself.

"Ahaha! She’s truly incredible! Even though we’re both witches, I can’t even see a glimmer of hope in beating her!"

The pinnacle of absurdity—her strength was so unreasonable, so overwhelming.

Even if the world were to suddenly collapse, she would undoubtedly be the one to survive it all.

Perhaps she was the only being in this world capable of such a feat.

Yes.

Until yesterday.

Reaching into her hood, the woman pulled out a black-glowing orb and stared at it, bursting into laughter once more as she gazed upon it.
