Chapter 44: Academy Heroine's Right Diagonal Back Seat

Chapter 44

In a corner of the western border area, monsters swarmed around a defensive barricade. Among the small group desperately defending the barricade, shouts rang out.

"Hey, keep your head in the game! If you screw up now, it's not just you who'll die, but your friends too!"

"S-Sorry. But I can’t muster any more strength..."

"Damn it... Fall back and swap with the one recharging their mana! The rest of us will hold them off!"

A man shouted, smashing the head of a monster trying to climb over the barricade with a blunt weapon. He directed his words at a female student who was staggering from exhaustion due to the prolonged battle.

"Mister! More of them are coming!"

"Tell me about it! Damn those observation team bastards! They said there wouldn't be any problems here, and now look at this!"

As the student screamed, pointing at the approaching horde of monsters, the man cursed, recalling the observation team's confident assertion that this area had low magical contamination and wouldn’t see many monsters.

A mass of monsters appeared along the western border area.

Due to manpower shortages, the observation team had judged this place to be relatively safe, so only four students and one supervising hero were stationed here.

As a result, they were now desperately holding off well over a hundred monsters with just five people.

They were severely outnumbered.

Even with the barricade, having students who weren't fully trained, or even seasoned heroes, trying to hold off such a large number of monsters was nearly impossible.

After the exhausted female student retreated, another student who had been recharging their mana stepped forward and began preparing a large-scale magic spell.

Though wizards lacked physical endurance and combat sustainability, with enough mana and preparation time, they could be incredibly effective on the battlefield.

If they could unleash the wide-area magic, it would significantly impact the monster horde. However, there weren’t enough people to buy the necessary time.

"I don’t know if it's just me, but it looks like there are even more than before...! We can’t hold them back!"

They had barely managed to defend the barricade with four people. With one girl retreating and another preparing magic, a gap allowed a monster to slip through the barricade.

If the monsters started getting past the barricade, it would be impossible to hold them off.

The student preparing the spell was now exposed, and the monster charged toward them.

"Damn it! Hey! It’s coming for you! Cancel the spell and block it!"

"If I cancel this, there’s no way we can stop them. If I’m going down, I’ll at least cast this spell. Avenge me if you can."

Realizing that without reducing the number of monsters, they would all die, the student ignored the monster charging at them, focusing on casting the spell.

It was a heart-wrenching moment for the man as he heard the student's resolve.

Suddenly, a sword flew in from somewhere, creating a barrier that blocked the monster’s attack.

In that moment, the student completed the spell, and a wall of flames erupted, incinerating the monsters near the barricade.

As the monsters momentarily fell back, the man smashed the monster against the barrier and saw a white-haired boy running toward them.

There were two barricades they needed to defend. The boy had gone to the other barricade alone to check on the monsters trying to breach it.

Thinking the boy must have given up and returned, the man asked,

"Did they break through over there? Do we need to retreat?"

The boy replied,

"No need."

With a sword emitting a white light like his hair in his hand, he placed his hand on the barricade.

"I just finished taking care of them."

With that, the boy leapt over the barricade into the swarm of monsters.

"Hey, you crazy-!"

The man’s exclamation ceased as he looked beyond the barricade.

His mouth hung open in awe.

The boy, surrounded by monsters, wielded his sword with unmatched skill.

It wasn’t just one sword he wielded. Every time he released a sword from his hand, another would appear in its place.

With a swing of a single-handed sword, a monster’s head was severed,

With a thrust of a slender sword, another monster fell,

And with a sweep of a large greatsword, the surrounding monsters were cut down.

The boy wielded various swords as if they were extensions of his own body, moving freely.

He showed no hesitation in discarding a sword and grabbing another, moving fluidly through the horde.

It was as if gravity had reversed; the monsters' black blood shot into the sky and rained down, yet not a single drop touched the white-haired boy. He stood amidst the chaos, unblemished, the master of his swords.

All the students here were supposedly first-year students.

“How is he a student...?”

The man thought in awe, feeling a shiver at the sight.

A monster from Aegis Academy, indeed.

After the situation ended, the supervising hero escorted Yoon Si-woo and his group to a nearby teleportation gate, expressing his admiration and encouragement for the young student’s future as a great hero.

After parting with the hero, Yoon Si-woo led his nearly collapsed classmates through the gate, returning to the designated camp.

Due to safety measures, internal and external teleports within the barrier were impossible, so they had to move directly to the inside.

The area around the gate was bustling with heroes returning from their missions. Among them were the rest of the students and their homeroom teacher, Eve.

“Aegis Academy, First Year Class A, Group 1, all present and accounted for.”

Yoon Si-woo was the only one among his team who was in decent shape, so he reported their return to Eve.

Eve sighed deeply as she took in the sight of the rest of the team, who were visibly exhausted and battered.

"Si-woo, what happened?"

"Haha, a bunch of monsters attacked us. Quite a lot of them..."

To be honest, it was more than just "quite a lot."

There were moments when things could have gone very badly if it weren’t for him. Despite this, everyone returned safely, so Yoon Si-woo replied with a bitter smile.

"Really? That must have been tough. But I’m glad everyone looks okay..."

Eve sighed in relief at Yoon Si-woo’s response.

"I think something happened at the school too. I hope everyone there is alright."

Yoon Si-woo’s expression hardened at her worried words.

"Did something happen at the school?"

"I don’t know the details. But we received a signal that the gymnasium doors were closed. The students left at the school should have been able to handle most monsters, but if the doors were closed, it means something they couldn’t handle occurred. I asked the fastest person I know to go to the school and check, but I hope nothing serious happened..."

Yoon Si-woo remembered Scarlet, who had said she would stay at the school in the morning.

He wanted to check if she was safe right away.

With the situation resolved, she might have gone home. But if he went to her house now, she would definitely be annoyed, especially after asking him not to worry about her. So, he had to suppress his current feelings.

[You’re really in deep.]

Lucy was commenting as well.

I know.

He knew that having these feelings was a burden on her.

But no matter how hard he tried, the emotions that surged whenever he thought of her couldn’t be suppressed. For Yoon Si-woo, who had only ever opened up to Lucy, controlling these feelings was impossible.

Since he had the Holy Sword of Truth, he found it hard to trust people easily.

Even well-meaning lies told to avoid hurting someone, or lies to gain favor, all planted seeds of distrust in his heart when he saw people lying without a change in expression.

However, the girl he watched had never lied, even when sharing difficult truths.

At first, it was just a simple interest. But seeing her always tell the truth, he couldn’t help but be drawn to her, realizing that such people existed.

Even though she pushed him away and rejected him, his feelings for her grew uncontrollably.

Interest turned to affection, and affection turned to love.

Even if his one-sided love caused him pain, just seeing her made his heart race like an addictive drug.

When she smiled, he felt happy. When she was sad, he felt sorrow too.

At some point, her presence had grown so large in his heart.

“Today was tough. Go home and rest! I’ll see you all at school tomorrow!”

With Eve’s declaration of dismissal, Yoon Si-woo thought as he went home.

Yes, he would see her at school tomorrow.

That night, Yoon Si-woo dreamt.

In his dream, the red-haired girl was smiling.

She was always expressionless in reality, but he hoped she could live while smiling like that.

And even if only occasionally, he wished she would smile at him like that, Yoon Si-woo wished earnestly.

*

The next day, her empty seat.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, but yesterday, an intermediate-level monster attacked the school without being weakened.”

Eve reported with a stiff face during the morning assembly.

“Because of that, Evande is seriously injured and is in the hospital.”

Yoon Si-woo didn’t know what kind of expression he had on his face.

    1. There were two, but one was killed by Scarlet before the adults came in, everyone else was behind the door and only one was there when the adults arrived as Scarlet passed out from her injuries.

  10. If he knows MC wants him far away, he should do so.
At least that would show he's actually listening to what MC asked earneastly of him.
He has no right to intrude nor ask for reasons, because they aren't anything anyway.
I can understand he has a crush, but that doesn't mean MC has to give him the time of day.
This happens in reality too and is VERY annoying.
One can like a person, that doesn't give a right to push for attention or an answer, positive or not.
    That's just a selfish desire.

    1. Thing is, he is starting to learn, he asked three questions out of worry and just to be sure and immediately left, he didn’t overstay anymore than he needed to, he knows he’s not supposed to be there but he has to at least know if she’s alright, so that’s what he did, he came, he saw, and he left, not much else.
