Chapter 5: Academy Heroine’s Right Diagonal Back Seat

 Chapter 5

Since that incident, Yoon Si-woo kept glancing at me. Every time his eyes flicked in my direction, I wanted to give him another Fire Punch, but other students were finishing their measurements and returning to the classroom, so I gritted my teeth and restrained myself.

Besides, it would be troublesome if I accidentally burned my clothes again...

For the sake of my mental stability, I needed Sylvia.

In the original work, she finished her measurement around the same time as Yoon Si-woo, but she seemed a bit delayed today.

Just as I thought that, Sylvia appeared in her seat.

She looked a bit more disheveled than before, probably tired from the measurement.

As I stared at Sylvia’s profile, the turbulent emotions caused by Yoon Si-woo began to calm down.

After catching her breath for a moment, Sylvia shivered upon noticing Yoon Si-woo sitting next to her.

Her previously disheveled posture instantly straightened.

With a faint blush visible on her cheeks, she spoke to Yoon Si-woo.

"I didn't get a chance to thank you properly. I’m Sylvia Astra. Thank you so much for what you did earlier. I'd like to repay you somehow."

"Oh, I'm Yoon Si-woo. Don’t worry about it. I didn’t do it expecting any repayment."

"But still..."

"Besides, we’ll be seeing each other for a year, right? Just help me out if I get into trouble later."

Sylvia’s eyes seemed to glaze over.

Was she thinking something like, "Not just a year, I want to see you forever"?

If I were in Sylvia's position, I’d already be thinking about what to name our grandkids.

So please, stop looking at me while talking to Sylvia, you idiot...

Sylvia seemed to sense this too and occasionally glared at me sharply.

Maybe it’s all my fault.

Having experienced being a high school boy myself, I couldn't entirely blame Yoon Si-woo.

After all, seeing a classmate naked would be a big deal.

If my ability wasn’t fire-related, none of this would have happened.

Oh, I really need a status window...

Eventually, everyone finished their measurements, and shortly after, another teacher entered the room instead of Eve.

The teacher said, "Since it’s the first day of class, we’ll keep it simple." Yet, they gave a passionate two-hour lecture.

Since the novel didn’t describe these theory classes in detail, I found it a bit intriguing.

It reinforced the feeling that this place was indeed a fully-fledged world.

However, I didn’t understand much about the history of this world or the mindset heroes should have.

So, I just stared at Sylvia absentmindedly, and before I knew it, it was lunchtime.

As soon as lunchtime began, Sylvia invited Yoon Si-woo, "Would you like to have lunch together?"

Noticing that Yoon Si-woo might look in my direction, I quickly escaped to the cafeteria.

The food was delicious...

Since the students were future heroes who would risk their lives in battle, the quality of the meals was extraordinary.

How could fried fish taste this good?

As I marveled at the food from a corner where no one was likely to come, I saw Yoon Si-woo and Sylvia having lunch together in the distance.

Even just eating, they looked like a painting.

I ignored Yoon Si-woo’s occasional glances in my direction and finished my meal, then returned to the classroom.

Sitting in my seat, I felt something was off.

A sense of unease, maybe.

I looked around, but besides students who had come up after lunch and were sitting on the window sills or chatting, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

It seemed like an ordinary classroom scene.

Yet, I instinctively knew something was wrong, even if I couldn't pinpoint what it was.

Then, I faced an undeniable reality that shocked me.

I was the only one alone.

The sharp realization of being an outcast.

Huh? Why?

The school life I dreamed of in academy novels wasn’t supposed to be this lonely.

My hands and feet trembled.

It felt like if I didn't make any friends today, I'd be alone for the rest of my school life.

At that moment, I saw Sylvia entering the classroom.

Friends... I want to be friends with Sylvia!

“C-Could you be my friend?”

I found myself impulsively shouting.

Immediately, a wave of embarrassment washed over me.

Thinking about it, friendships usually form naturally, not by making requests like this.

Because of that, Sylvia also looked at me with a gaze that seemed to say, "What is this guy saying?"

“So, Scarlet Evande? You want to be friends with me?”

I quickly nodded in response to Sylvia’s question.

My heart raced as she looked me over with a curious expression.

With a faint smile, she finally said,

“Alright. Let’s be friends.”

An endorphin rush shot through me.

Wow! Scarlet Evande for the win!

“By the way, I’d really like to have some of those special macarons from the cafeteria. Could you get some for me?”

But her next words left me stunned.

Was she really trying to make me her bread shuttle so openly?

“Please? We’re friends, right?”

Even though she said it with a big smile, I had to say something.

Gathering my emotions, I shouted,

“I’ll get them!”

I jumped up and headed to the cafeteria.

...It might look like I’m being a pushover, but it’s actually not that bad.

Think about it. If you could become friends with a beautiful girl like Sylvia just by buying her bread, wouldn’t you?

Even in gacha games, guys would spend real money for a 1% chance to get a beautiful girl character.

But here, I could get a 100% friendship with a beautiful girl for the price of some bread. It was a great deal.

Guys would probably line up to buy her bread if they knew.

This was a profitable trade no matter how you looked at it.

The cafeteria was filled with high-quality bread that didn’t seem like it belonged in a school.

The macarons Sylvia wanted were 3,000G each.

G stood for Gold. Honestly, if 1 Gold equaled 1 Won, why bother converting it?

1 Gold felt like enough to feed a family of four for a month, which was strange.

I paid for the macarons with my student ID.

Eve had reissued my student ID after my previous one burned along with my uniform.

The student ID worked like a debit card, and luckily, it had over 3,000G in the account.

I should check my balance when I get home.

“Hey, redhead, stop right there.”

On my way back to the classroom, I was stopped by a girl.

She was the classmate who had shouted for everyone to evacuate earlier in the morning.

With her glasses and bob haircut, she reminded me of a class representative.

In the novel, she was just called ‘Rep.’

“While I acknowledge your quick recognition of the illusion, isn’t it a problem for a hero candidate to cause trouble by being late? Aren’t you too old to need your parents to wake you up?”

Yeah, she was a character who spoke bluntly like that.

It might sound offensive, but I knew she was genuinely concerned, so I didn’t mind much.

Besides, she wasn’t wrong.

So, I smiled and replied to her consideration,

“Sorry, I won’t be late from now on. And I don’t have parents.”

It was a reasonable assumption.

If Scarlet Evande had parents, their contact information would have been registered.

Maybe if my past self had played the game a bit better, I would have had parents.

But since I didn’t, Scarlet had become a devoted daughter with fire attributes...

Anyway, I didn’t have time for this.

I needed to bring the macarons to Sylvia.

Leaving the Rep, who had turned pale, behind, I returned to the classroom.

Sylvia was happily chatting with Yoon Si-woo.

I quietly approached her and handed over the macarons.

Sylvia seemed slightly flustered as she accepted the macarons.

Yoon Si-woo saw this and asked,

“What’s that?”

“Oh, these? Scarlet wanted to buy them to celebrate our new friendship. Right, Scarlet?”

It was slightly different from the truth, but close enough, so I nodded.

Besides, Sylvia called me by my name!

Scarlet, she called me Scarlet!

I couldn't help but smile widely.

“...What about mine?”

As I was enjoying the moment, I heard a voice and turned to see who it was.

It was Yoon Si-woo.

He looked at me with a hopeful expression, blushing.

“Don’t I get one?”

What does this guy think he did to deserve macarons from me?

If he saw me naked, shouldn’t he be the one buying me something?

I was so taken aback by his lack of conscience that I stiffened and distanced myself from him.

Yoon Si-woo looked very dejected.

For some reason, Sylvia gave me a hostile look.

Not knowing what I did wrong, I decided that from tomorrow on, I’d buy two macarons.

  1. I find hard to understand why would someone be a pushover like that and on purpose. I rather be alone than that.
Also, it's clear that it's not MC's fault that the OML is sticking close... on the contrary.
Besides, as MC said, OML didn't do anything to deserve favours anyway.
