Chapter 15: Academy Heroine’s Right Diagonal Back Seat

 Chapter 15

[Yoon Si-woo, you really dislike staying at home, don’t you?]

“It’s no fun staying in an empty house. I prefer wandering around outside rather than watching TV or surfing the internet.”

Yoon Si-woo responded to Lucy as he walked down the street.

It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the whole truth either.

Yoon Si-woo grew up as an orphan.

It wasn’t that he didn’t know his parents’ faces.

There were a few photos of his parents holding him as a baby, and he had vague memories of their faces.

However, his parents, who were heroes, had crossed a river of no return, leaving him behind when he was still a child.

Yoon Si-woo spent his childhood in an orphanage that took care of the children of fallen heroes.

People generously supported the children of heroes who died fighting for them, and the caregivers treated the children with love.

Thus, the children in the orphanage grew up bright and cheerful despite not having parents.

Si-woo never felt any discomfort with such a life.

However, there was one thing he had always desired since childhood.

He wondered what a ‘real’ family felt like.

The adults in the orphanage treated him almost like their own child, but when he came of age, he had to leave them.

That wasn’t the kind of real family he envisioned.

Of course, saying such things would make the orphanage’s caregivers sad, so he kept this desire to himself.

As for the kids? If he mentioned it to them, the girls in the orphanage, who were already competing to marry him when they grew up, would start an outright war.

This issue was resolved for Si-woo not long after he turned eight.

In the early morning when everyone was asleep, he felt a sense of connection with something.

Curious about the strange sensation, Si-woo cautiously asked, “Who are you?”

At that moment, a sword appeared before his eyes.

A pure white sword, spotless and clean. Si-woo instinctively knew that this sword was the source of his feeling of connection.

[Kid, you have an interesting ability. I’m in a good mood, so I’ll grant you a wish. I can give you great power or endless wealth. Go ahead, tell me. What do you desire?]

A gentle female voice spoke.

Si-woo realized the sword in front of him was speaking to him.

He thought of a fairy tale he had read recently.

A genie in a lamp that grants wishes.

Recalling the wish he had thought of while reading the tale, he made his wish to the sword.

“Then, can you become my family?”

Humans eventually die.

Like his parents, who had left him behind.

Si-woo dreamed of a family that wouldn’t leave him.

Unlike humans, the genie in the lamp didn’t die.

He thought the sword in front of him wouldn’t die either.

So he asked the sword to become his family.

[......Interesting. Truly an unexpected answer. I can’t take back what I’ve said, so I’ll grant your wish.]

The sword approached Si-woo’s face.

A bit surprised but quickly regaining her composure, the sword spoke in a calm voice.

[Kid, let’s make a contract. I don’t know what kind of family you envision, but I’ll stay by your side until you no longer need me. Is that alright?]

“Yes. And I’m not a kid; I’m Yoon Si-woo.”

[Alright, Si-woo. I am... the Holy Sword of Humility. If you wish to form a contract, grasp me.]

As the sword, calling itself the Holy Sword of Humility, spoke, Si-woo reached out his hand. Just before touching the sword, he asked,

“By the way, isn’t Holy Sword of Humility a bit too long? Do you have another name?”

[A name... Then]

[Call me Lucy.]

Si-woo’s small hand grasped the sword.

From his hand, a pure white light flowed out and enveloped his body.

When the light that had covered his body vanished, his black hair and left eye had turned pure white, as if the light had settled into them.

On that day, Yoon Si-woo became family with Lucy, the Holy Sword of Humility.

Since then, Lucy had become an inseparable part of Si-woo’s life.

She became his swordsmanship teacher, fulfilling his desire to become a hero like his parents. After he left the orphanage at 15, she revealed the locations of hidden ruins, helping him acquire new holy swords.

Si-woo wouldn’t have been able to enroll in the academy without Lucy’s help.

With the money he made from selling some of the treasures from the ruins, Si-woo bought a country house not far from the academy, where he currently lived.

With Lucy always by his side, he didn’t feel lonely. However, the large house he bought with a hefty sum sometimes made him long for human warmth when lying idle. This is why Si-woo often enjoyed wandering outside.

Long ago, cities built by great archmages, who wanted to create safe havens for people, were peaceful within their magical barriers.

Walking down the street, one could see people smiling.

Just seeing those smiles made Si-woo feel good.

He thought those smiles were worth the sacrifices made by countless heroes, and he could understand a bit why his parents had made such a choice.

Remembering that he was running out of groceries, Si-woo headed to the supermarket.

As he was putting random items into his basket, he noticed a red-haired girl entering the supermarket.

It was Scarlet Evande, a classmate from his class.

[Oh, how about you go say hello?]

Lucy spoke to Si-woo in a teasing voice.

Silently telling Lucy to be quiet, Si-woo approached Scarlet naturally and greeted her.

Scarlet nodded slightly without saying a word.

She was usually cold towards him, so Si-woo pondered how to continue the conversation.

He recalled a phrase he had read in a book as a child, ‘Praise makes even a whale dance.’

Although he didn’t expect her to dance, he thought she wouldn’t feel bad about receiving a compliment.

“Scarlet, you’re such a dutiful daughter.”

“I don’t have parents.”

And he stepped on a landmine.

Si-woo felt his mind go blank.

He knew very well how painful it could be to bring up parents in front of someone who didn’t have any.

So, feeling as apologetic as possible, he immediately apologized to her.

“Don’t worry about it. We’re in the same boat, aren’t we?”

Scarlet responded indifferently.

He was taken aback.

He couldn’t recall ever telling anyone that he didn’t have parents.

Had he ever mentioned that he didn’t have parents?

When Yoon Si-woo asked himself this question, Scarlet answered as if it was obvious.

“It just seemed that way.”

She spoke as if it were the most natural thing, so he unconsciously replied, “Really?”

The Holy Sword of Truth told him she was speaking honestly.

Confused, she gestured for him to move aside as if she didn’t want to be disturbed.

He left the supermarket without resolving his confusion.

On his way home, Yoon Si-woo wondered how she could have known.

From the first time he met her, he thought she was very observant.

Wasn’t she quicker to realize a high-level illusion magic than even he, who possessed the Holy Sword of Radiance, who couldn’t see through it? Didn’t she notice that he could see through illusion magic and punch him for peeping at her naked body?

Perhaps, as someone who didn’t have parents herself, she could instinctively recognize others who didn’t have parents.

While he was thinking this, Lucy spoke in a lamenting voice.

[Love makes people truly foolish……]

Foolish? Yoon Si-woo didn’t understand Lucy’s words.

The next day, after lunch, Yoon Si-woo was walking down the street as usual.

With the exceptional senses granted by the blessings of the Holy Sword, he quickly hid behind a building when he noticed a familiar red color in his field of vision.

He wasn’t sure why he did it, but he somehow didn’t have the courage to approach her.

Maybe it was because he had made a thoughtless mistake yesterday.

While he was thinking this, Lucy spoke in an exasperated voice.

[Si-woo… do you realize you look very perverted right now?]

Shut up, Lucy.

Rebuking Lucy, Yoon Si-woo peeked out again to catch a glimpse of Scarlet.

Come to think of it, this was the first time he had seen her in casual clothes.

Yesterday, even when she came to the supermarket, she was wearing her school uniform.

Her long hair, reaching down to her waist, fluttered in the wind.

Wearing a long skirt that reached her ankles and a cardigan, she looked more mature than girls her age, dressing neatly without revealing any skin.

His heart started beating a little faster than usual.

He was about to step out and talk to her when he noticed her eyes were red.

His heart, which had been racing, sank.

Yoon Si-woo remembered their conversation.

She had spoken as if it were nothing, but perhaps she had been hurt.

He imagined her crying alone in an empty house, searching for her parents.

He pulled back.

He didn’t feel like facing her.

Yoon Si-woo started moving again only after Scarlet was far out of sight.

He naturally followed her.

Lucy called him with a sorrowful voice, [Si-woo……], but Yoon Si-woo couldn’t understand why he was acting this way.

Yoon Si-woo witnessed Scarlet helping an elderly lady carry her bags.

He saw kindness in her steps as she adjusted her pace to match the old lady’s.

Matching his steps to hers, his heartbeat grew even faster.

After escorting the elderly lady to her destination, Scarlet walked to a nearby park and sat on a bench.

Yoon Si-woo watched her from a distance.

Her gaze slowly moved across the people in the park until it settled on a family, a couple laughing as they watched their children play.

Scarlet watched them for a while, then stretched her hand towards the sky and lifted her head.

“Maybe I don’t belong in this world……”

Her sorrowful voice pierced Yoon Si-woo’s ears.

The Holy Sword of Truth confirmed her sincerity, weighing heavily on him.

It’s the truth.

He, too, didn’t have parents, but he had Lucy.

But unlike him, she might have spent her entire life alone.

The fact that he couldn’t empathize with her pain tore at his heart.

That’s why it happened.

When she lifted her hand to wipe away her tears, he unintentionally made a noise.

Did she notice his presence?

She looked in his direction, startled, and ran off somewhere.

His heart ached.

Placing his hand on his pounding chest, Yoon Si-woo gave a bitter smile.

He had tried to deny it, but now he couldn’t anymore.

The feeling that was making his heart ache,

It was undoubtedly love.

  2. It feels like every time mc sees Yoon Si-woo, she gets reminded that she isnt part of this world and she runs away ?

    1. Well, both Sylvia and him, as protagonists are a reminder so it may be part of it.
I think it may be because the guy always has the worst timing ever to appear too.
We know there's trauma about crying.
Besides he has seen MC naked and is constantly pushing himself onto MC, when it's clear that there's no interest on MC's part.
More so considering that Sylvia is jealous (i would ditch her if it was me but whatever).

  4. Uhm, stalker much? I agree with the sword here xD
I really hope he isn't the romantic interest and it's just the one that brought MC here being annoying.
Even if there's things in common, like what's shown in this chapter, it's not a reason for binding them together.
Actually, the lack of understandig may be worse in such case.
It's certainly more annoying when someone acts like things are understood without actually talking it off just because the experience is similar.
Worse if the person takes actions without consent. Which i hope doesn't happen.
As i see it, it's good that the MC is starting to realize the pain inside.
Can't fix if you don't know it's broken in the first place.

  7. Si-woo asking Lucy to become his family reminded me of Aladdin asking Ugo to become his friend in Magi.
That's simple sentence just had me feeling sentimental because of nostalgia lol

  8. I love how the author shows the other characters stories too. it makes them more real and not too two-dimensional. Also, I don't actually mind if Si-woo becomes a love interest.. well, i just hoped there was another who would strike chemistry with MC y'know.

  9. Well if they both are happy
