Chapter 12: Academy Heroine’s Right Diagonal Back Seat

 Chapter 12

"Never forget that you are of the great Astra bloodline."

The great Astra.

This might be the phrase Sylvia heard most frequently in her life.

‘It’s a family with nothing left but its name to be called great.’

Sylvia always thought this whenever she heard those words.

There was indeed a time when Astra could be called a truly great bloodline.

A family that directly managed the World Tree, which was considered the backbone of the Elves.

The family blessed by the most powerful spirit, the Spirit of the Stars.

That was the title given to the High Elf lineage, the Astra family.

The Astra family, closely tied to the World Tree and blessed by the spirit, enjoyed lifespans nearing half a millennium. Living through such a vast expanse of time, their influence spread to every corner of the world.

It was said that when Astra visited, even the flying birdfolk would stop their flight and bow their heads to the ground, indicating just how influential the family was.

But that was all in the past.

Five hundred years ago, the World Tree was burned by a witch, causing the Elves to lose their spirituality.

With the World Tree, their foundation, destroyed, and their connection with the spirits almost severed, the Elves’ lifespans became no different from those of humans, whom they had always thought lived fleeting lives.

Astra was furious.

They mobilized all their resources to gather heroes from around the world to hunt down the witch who burned the World Tree, and they finally succeeded in their goal.

But as a result, a family that once ruled the world dropped to the level of a merely prestigious noble family.

They still had a few large businesses due to their past reputation, but compared to their former influence, it was a mere fraction.

‘Yet the elders of the family still believe we are the great Astra…’

Sylvia hated this.

To her, the name Astra was merely a cage that imprisoned her.

‘If I had known it would be like this, it would have been better to keep it hidden.’

As a child, Sylvia enjoyed lying in bed and looking at the stars before falling asleep.

Everyone around her said that they were the people loved by the stars.

Maybe if you make a wish upon a star, it might come true!

Sylvia thought so with her innocent heart.

That day was no different.

Lying in bed, she made a wish to the stars, "Star, please let me eat my favorite sweets tomorrow as much as I want."

Suddenly, she thought she heard someone’s voice, and when she opened her eyes, the star shining unusually brightly in the sky seemed larger and closer than ever before.

She marveled at the beautiful light, reaching out her arms to the sky in awe.

That was the moment when Sylvia’s eyes captured the star.

Her hands sparkled with starlight.

Without much thought, Sylvia showed the new trick she could do overnight to her father.

Usually, when she did something well, he would let her eat a bit more sweets, so she hoped that showing this new trick would also allow her to eat more sweets.

But the result was beyond her imagination.

"You are the future of Astra."

Seeing the starlight in Sylvia’s hands, her father shed tears and summoned all the elders of the family.

"Sylvia, show everyone."

Although a bit frightened by the attention, Sylvia obeyed her father.

Seeing the starlight in her hands, the elders of the family all wiped their eyes.

-Oh, Mother World Tree, you haven’t abandoned us yet…

-Ah, the great star of Astra hasn’t fallen yet…

-From this day forward, this child is the rightful heir of Astra.

Sylvia didn’t know.

She didn’t understand what significance the Spirit of the Stars had to the Astra family.

She didn’t know she was the only one in her generation to contract with the Spirit of the Stars.

Nor did she realize how her life would change because of it.

From that day, Sylvia’s daily life completely changed.

-The heir of Astra must always excel above others.

Every day, she endured hours of political, economic, historical, and etiquette lessons filled with difficult words.

To communicate with the spirits, she had to use spirit magic until she was exhausted.

-The heir of Astra must always be impeccable.

She had to be conscious of every action she took, even those she performed naturally.

Walking, sitting, speaking with someone, eating; if there was even a slight mistake, a harsh voice would come from beside her.

It was too much for a six-year-old child.

But Sylvia endured.

She could feel the family elders’ expectations bearing down on her.

She resisted the urge to complain about the difficulty of her lessons and held back tears when her back hurt from maintaining the correct posture.

She refrained from eating her favorite sweets because the elders said they were unhealthy.

From that time on, for Sylvia, life was about enduring.

The six-year-old Sylvia became sixteen-year-old Sylvia Astra.

At her middle school, her status was akin to that of a princess.

A beautiful High Elf from a prestigious family, even mentioned in textbooks.

Naturally, she had many followers and even a fan club.

But despite always being surrounded by people, Sylvia felt empty.

They were merely captivated by the facade of Astra that she wore.

She had many people around her, but no friends.

Sylvia was fed up with people who approached her claiming they wanted to befriend her, only to demand something as soon as she let her guard down slightly.

She also felt that the elders of her family only saw her as the successor of Astra.

To them, she was merely a tool to momentarily reminisce about their past glory, Sylvia thought.

Neither at school nor at home did Sylvia have a place for herself as Sylvia.

Everyone simply wanted the heir of the Astra family.

Sylvia felt stifled by this life she had endured so far.

So, Sylvia attempted her first act of rebellion.

“What is this about? Why Aegis Academy all of a sudden?”

She had whimsically taken the entrance exam for Aegis Academy instead of the school she was originally supposed to attend.

Seeing her father's flustered face for the first time in a while, Sylvia felt a sense of thrill and responded with a smile.

“Astra led the charge in the witch hunt, so it's a good justification, and Aegis will have many children from prestigious families, which will be helpful for building connections for the future. This is my thought process as the heir of Astra. Is there a problem?”

“...If that’s the case, then so be it. Just never forget that you carry the blood of the great Astra.”

Her act of rebellion was successful.

And so, Sylvia entered Aegis Academy.

Since this place trained future heroes, there wouldn't be any nagging sent by her family under the pretense of assisting her. She was very much looking forward to her school life ahead.

On her first day of school, Sylvia understood what it felt like to fall in love at first sight.

A white-haired male student arrived late to the classroom, with a face that seemed as if God had lazily carved it from his own features.

From the moment she first saw him, her heart started to race.

As he naturally moved towards the empty seat beside her, she wondered if this was the fateful first meeting with a prince on a white horse, like in the fairy tales she had read as a child.

The moment she waited for him to speak to her, he sat next to her and instead spoke to the red-haired girl sitting behind him.

Sylvia, who had always believed she was never inferior to anyone, felt the emotion of jealousy for the first time towards that girl.

"The ones who scored 200 points? I made theirs a bit sturdier. Do you want the same, Miss Sylvia?"

In the illusionary magic test conducted by homeroom teacher Eve, Sylvia requested to be matched under the same conditions as the two who received higher evaluations than herself.

Astra must always be superior to others.

Those words, ingrained in her over the past ten years, had made Sylvia unable to tolerate being inferior to anyone.

Although she didn't mind if it was Yoon Si-woo, the male student she had fallen for, at the very least, she wanted to be rated higher than the red-haired girl from earlier, Scarlet Evande.

It was said that Scarlet barely managed to make a slight scratch on the scarecrow Eve had created.

Therefore, Sylvia felt she had to completely destroy the scarecrow.

To achieve this goal, Sylvia had to use spells almost to the point of exhaustion.

After the test was over, she noticed that Yoon Si-woo’s gaze frequently turned towards Scarlet.

His eyes, which were merely curious before, seemed to have changed slightly.

Seeing him blush while looking at her, Sylvia felt a blow to her pride.

She considered herself more attractive than the red-haired girl, both in appearance and behavior.

Jealousy grew within Sylvia's heart.

“C-can you be my friend?”

When Scarlet timidly asked this, Sylvia felt anger.

Friends? You just want to use me.

She was about to curtly refuse, but a sudden thought made her accept the friendship offer.

‘If she just wants to use me, a bit of mischief should be fine.’

Thinking this, Sylvia told Scarlet to buy macarons from the school store.

Her tone was friendly, but it was an order she would give to a subordinate.

She thought that since students capable of entering this academy would all have strong pride, saying something like this would hurt her feelings. Contrary to her expectations, Scarlet ran to buy macarons without hesitation.

Seeing Scarlet handing over the macarons with a bright smile, Sylvia was slightly taken aback.

Even if she wanted to use the background of Astra, did this girl have no pride at all?

She felt a bit puzzled, but more than that, she was happy to be able to eat her favorite macarons without being conscious of others for the first time in a while.

Immediately after that thought, her mood plummeted again when she saw Yoon Si-woo blushingly ask Scarlet if she didn't have any for him.

After that, Scarlet started bringing macarons to Sylvia without being asked.

Yesterday, she was surprised when Scarlet brought them after overhearing her mention wanting to eat dessert, but today, she seemed to read Sylvia’s mind and brought macarons the moment Sylvia thought of them.

As Sylvia ate the macarons that Scarlet handed over, she momentarily wondered if this person might actually be good-hearted, but she quickly shook her head.

If someone was acting this subservient, they were surely planning to ask for something outrageous.

She couldn't let her guard down.

‘Besides...’

She saw Yoon Si-woo approaching Scarlet with a smile.

‘There's no way I could ever like someone like her.’

Glaring at Scarlet, Sylvia thought so.

  4. Well, it's not like i don't get her thought process. However, she's being unnecessarily mean to someone that's just trying to be nice.
One can be wary of motives without being an ass.
Besides, although i can understand jealousy, it doesn't take much to realize that MC doesn't even want that attention from the guy.
